Last week we began a sermon series titled “Those Who Know Your Name”, which is taken from Psalm 9:10, “Those who know your name will put their trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.” When we know who God is, we trust. him. For the rest of December and through the month of January we will be looking together at the names and titles of God, so that our faith in him might grow.
This morning we will be back in Matthew chapter one and the story of the angel’s appearance to Joseph. The angel told Joseph to name their baby boy “Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Jesus’ name means Yahweh saves, or the Lord saves. Joseph could not have imagined everything this would mean. His own son delivering or rescuing people from their sin. Joseph’s son would be crucified, rise from the dead and ascend back to heaven to save people from the condemnation and death of sin. He will one day return to save his people from the presence of sin. He is presently working in his people to save us from the power of sin. All by grace through faith.
