In John 8 we find some of Jesus’ most gracious words.

We also find some of Jesus’ most harsh and bold words: “Unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”

Such a bold, exclusive statement. How can Jesus say such things?

Because he is one with the Father and speaks what the Father tells him to speak.

Because he will be lifted up on the cross to pay the penalty and debt that their sin deserves, and in doing so they will see that he is exactly who he says he is.

Do not die in your sin. Do not bear sin’s weight and sin’s death.

A way out has been provided through the lifting up of Jesus Christ on the cross.
