In the sixth chapter of John’s Gospel, we find Jesus leading a new exodus. Moses encountered I AM, who led His people out of slavery in Egypt with powerful signs and the blood of a lamb. I AM parted the Red Sea and provided manna for His people in the desert.
Jesus feeds thousands by multiplying a few fish and loaves of bread. Jesus walks on water and announces to His frightened disciples, “I myself am; do not be afraid!” Jesus tells the people that He does not just provide bread; “I am the bread of life”, the true bread from heaven.
When the crowds want to know what work God requires for eternal life, Jesus exhorts them to labor to trust Him. Believe Him. Come to Him. Receive Him. Work to believe.
Jesus makes four promises to those who will come to Him:
1. I will satisfy your hunger forever
2. I will not turn you away/cast you out
3. I will not lose you
4. I will raise you on the last day
